Cindy Bryan has over 30 years of private violin teaching experience, touching the lives of hundreds of violin students around the world. Her violin studio is conveniently located in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake, VA located near I-64 and the 168-Bypass, making it easy to reach for students in the surrounding cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Suffolk.

Fall in Love

My desire for my private violin students is for them to fall in love with their instruments. They should look forward to their violin lessons and walk out feeling like they have accomplished something. Their violin lessons should be both fun and productive!

Strong Foundation

It is crucial that a strong foundation regarding position, note and rhythm reading, is laid from the very first year of violin lessons. I also feel it is very important to give them the tools they need to make them independent thinkers so that when they go on to play on their own someday, whether it be professionally or for their own enjoyment, they will be able to teach themselves and continue to move forward in their playing. This means teaching them how to practice and problem solve through their violin lessons.

Share Their Gifts

I desire for my students to share their musical gifts with others which is accomplished through recitals each winter and spring at a local assisted care facility. I do this to give them a goal, to make them more confident through performance experiences, and be a blessing to our community. I would hope that they would continue to look for opportunities to play after their formal studies have ended by playing in their local community orchestra, churches or other venues.

Cindy graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor and Masters Degree in Music Education. There, she studied violin with Dr. Donald Portnoy and gained valuable teaching experience working with beginning classes, teaching private violin students, and directing orchestras in the USC String Project under the direction of Dr. Robert Jesselson and Pamela Tellejohn-Hayes (co-author of Essential Elements). While in school she also had the opportunity to play at EPCOT in the 1987 All-American College Orchestra, and the 1989 Continental Orchestra.

She went on to teach music, K-12, and direct several choirs at Okinawa Christian School International, while her husband served in the USAF and was stationed in Japan. She also played with the Okinawa Symphony Orchestra and taught private violin lessons. Upon returning to the states, Cindy taught beginning strings in the Norfolk Public Schools. After taking time off to stay home and homeschool her children, Cindy currently teaches four levels of string classes and is the Fine Arts Director at KEYS (Kingdom Education for Young Scholars). She has been a guest conductor for All-City events in Virginia Beach and Newport News as well as an adjudicator for local orchestra festivals. In 2014 and 2015, she was named as one of Hampton Road’s Outstanding Music Teachers by the Virginia Symphony. Cindy is currently Assistant Concertmaster of Symphonicity-The Symphony of Virginia Beach, as well as a member of the St. James String Quartet and Legacy.

My desire for my students is for them to fall in love with their instruments. They should look forward to their violin lessons and walk out feeling like they have accomplished something.

- Cindy Bryan -

Several violin students have gone on to be teachers and professional musicians. Here are some current and former violin students that have shared testimonies about the impact that private violin lessons with Cindy Bryan have had on their lives.

Mrs. Bryan is a positive and encouraging teacher. She helped prepare me for successful auditions to Governor's School and college music programs. I am working today as a professional musician and definitely would not be where I am without her!

Ashley Dyer Masters in Violin Performance and Concertmaster of the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra

The reason why I continued my studies through the violin was because of the positive experience I had with Cynthia Bryan. She was not only my first violin teacher, but also the first person to show me what it meant to think for myself. She gave me a new way of approaching my life through music and I could not be more grateful for the path she allowed me to create for everyone around me in our area.

Michelle Temple Mother of student

I wanted to thank you for all you've done for me the past 5 years of my life. I really believe that if it weren't for you I probably would have quit violin the first year started (because I didnt understand it). From staying with me after class, to private lessons, to making sure I got into Jr. Regionals, you have done so much for me! I could not have asked for a better foundation for the next chapter with my violin. I will never forget your hard work and dedication.
